What is a Recall?
A recall is when a manufacturer requests consumer’s return items from a specific product run or batch that has been found to be harmful or defective or pose some kind of safety concern. Recalls occur on everything from food products tainted with salmonella, faulty baby car seats, automobiles with defective parts, medical devices or medications that can cause harmful side effects and much more.

Why do Recalls occur?
Product recalls occur after a company or manufacturer discovers safety issues or defects in a product that they have produced that may cause harm or endanger consumers. Companies will often issue a recall in an effort to limit liability.

Who are recalls reported to?
Depending on the type of products, recalls are reported and tracked by different government agencies that include:

  • U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
  • U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
